To LoMA Students

 

At LoMA we require 2 DAYS of after school activities per week (12 EA credits) to graduate. Choose from the following options in order to fulfill this requirement. This form is due Friday Sept. 18th and note that some of activities

begin IMMEDIATELY. Note: ALL choices will appear on your report cards.

 

If you are involved in an extracurricular activity in your own neighborhood (for example the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, or a local team), you need to write it down at the bottom of this form and have it approved by Mr. Wenk or Ms. Gordon.  You will also need a letter from the organization at the end of the semester with the amount of hours listed.

 

 

You automatically get ALL your choices,

so choose carefully, and attend ON STARTING DATE!! 

 

 

CHOICE #1

Educational Alliance

START DATE: Immediately      ROOM: Education Alliance, 197 East Broadway (1 block away)

 

Monday-Friday, various times

2 EA Credits

 


Many different activities including dance, sports, capoeira, art, photography, poetry, yoga, fashion design, tutoring, homework help, counseling and a lot more.  Also available is a college prep program (includes scholarship information and will pay college application fees).

 

 

CHOICE #2

Tutoring

Various times/available Tues-Thurs, 3-3:45, Fridays and Lunch by appointment

1 EA Credit (or more depending on amount of time spent at tutoring)

 

START DATE: Immediately   ROOM: Your teacher’s room. See Ms. Gordon in ROOM 318 with questions.

 

You must have attached EA TUTORING FORM signed every time you attend tutoring and give it to MS. Gordon in Room 318 when completed.

 

You can get an EA credit for improving your grades! Teachers are available every day for tutoring. You can sign up with any of the teachers to come at least one day a week for extra help, raise whatever grade you have, and get a credit.

 

 

CHOICE #3

New York Cares

Meets twice a month on Tuesdays, 3:00-5:00 and 1 volunteer event a month

2 EA Credits

This is a volunteer venture with a prominent New York City organization.  We will be working on community service projects with children, teens, and people in need.  Many of our projects will be art based. 

 

 

CHOICE #4

Chorus

Thursdays, 3:15-4:30

1 EA Credit

 

START DATE: September 24      ROOM: 99

 

Chorus entails singing Pop Music mostly in the a cappella style and at times with accompaniment. Students will be required to audition with two pieces from different genres.  In this club students will learn how to sight-sing and how to properly use their voices through vocal and breathing techniques.

Video Club

Wednesday, 3:00-4:00

1 EA Credit

 

START DATE: September 23      ROOM: 338

 

Learn the process of making a short film. You will go through the steps of using your ideas to develop skills in storyboarding, shots/scenes creation, acting, lighting, sound and post production editing. Along the way you will also watch important scenes of films that have influenced the movie process.

Yoga Club

Tuesdays, 3:00-4:30

1 EA Credit

 

START DATE: September 23      ROOM: 99

 

Get in shape with Yoga! You will become stronger, more flexible, and learn how to de-stress your body and mind. This club is for any level, and will go through the basics of yoga ending with meditation. Yoga helps students with back pain and for students who want to start to get in shape. You will feel great following each session, so join Yoga Club!

Chess Club

Thursdays, 3:45-5:45

1 EA Credit

LoMA Chess Club is open to students and faculty. We will study the central ideas and strategies of the game. Most importantly, we will foster the enjoyment of recreational and competitive chess, and thereby promote the development and improvement of chess knowledge among members.

The Door

2 hours a week

2 EA Credits

 

START DATE: Immediately      ROOM: THE DOOR, 555 Broome Street (at Ave of the Americas)

 

The DOOR offers a large selection of activities including visual arts, music, radio production and development, and gallery of member work.  In addition healthcare, health education, counseling, legal services, homework help, college preparation, computer classes, job placement, meals, sports, and recreational activities are available.

Science Club

Monday 4:00-5:00

1 EA Credit

 

START DATE: October 5      ROOM: 304

 

The LOMA High School Science Club was designed for self-motivated, curious scientists. Students will each select a science fair project for the first semester that they will exhibit in the LOMA hallways! Students will be assisted through an independent project where they will design an experiment to test a hypothesis, collect data and complete a lab report.  Mr. Fry and Ms. Mehta will assist each student in their work, but most of the work will be done by the students.  This is an academic club that is designed for serious scientists.

Art and Culture of Asia

Mondays 3:00-4:00

1 EA Credit

 

START DATE: October 5      ROOM: 338

 

In this group you will have fun learning different aspects of the Asian culture. We will be creating origami, looking at the basics of Mandarin characters and how they are used, and learning about different Asian cities. We will also touch on calligraphy and other art forms.

Math Club

Tuesdays 3:45-4:45

1 EA Credit

 

START DATE: September 23      ROOM: 331

 

The math club is open to all students in all grades.  If you like figuring out problems, puzzles, and patterns then you should sign up for the math club.  This will not be a time for you to work on homework or study for tests.  We will be playing games, discussing historical math problems, devising unique strategies, and developing interesting problems.  There is also a chance to compete against other schools in math competitions if anyone is interested.  Make sure to sign up for the coolest club at LoMA.

ASPIRA

Mondays, 3:00-4:00

1 EA Credit

 

START DATE: October 5      ROOM: 328

 

Through the “ASPIRA Process”—Awareness, Analysis and Action—students learn to act on issues and problems in their communities that concern them.  Activities include school-based food drives; the creation and development of audio and video public service announcements directed to other youth about teen pregnancy, relationship abuse, violence prevention and adolescent sexuality, among other issues; and identifying a worthwhile community cause or issue and organizing a fundraiser to help remedy the problem identified.  Former ASPIRA club members include the actor Jimmy Smits; Fernando Ferrer, former Bronx borough president and New York City Democratic mayoral nominee; former Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra; and Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Theater Ensemble

Room 98

Thursdays and Fridays 3:15-6:00pm, and Selected Saturdays

Final 2 weeks of production may include late evening hours and weekends

Audition for Metamorphoses, Thursday, Sept. 24 and Friday, Sept. 25th

 

The LoMA Theater Ensemble is an after-school drama training program which encourages students to explore various practices essential in creating drama (acting, writing, etc.) and to reflect on how the theater arts can help them feel more powerful in the world.  Class activities include acting warm-ups and exercises, writing exercises, and rehearsals of chosen texts and/or original pieces written by the ensemble.

Student Council

Room 334

Wednesdays 3:00-4:00 and various events

2 EA Credits

Student council is comprised of one representative from each advisory, as well as other students interested in service-based learning. The Student Council is the voice of the student body at LoMA. We organizing annual events such as LoMA's Thanksgiving Dinner, The Talent Show, Spirit Week and various student dances and other activities. Students will also be responsible for organizing volunteer opportunities and participating in engaging the student body in activities and action!

Intramural Basketball

CHOICE #16

Swimming After School

Wednesdays 3:00-4:00

1 EA Credits

 

START DATE: October ??      ROOM: LoMA Pool

 

Once again we are planning swimming as an after-school activity in our beautiful Seward Pool. If you love swimming, come and join us! Whether you want to learn how to swim or you are interested in developing skills to become a lifeguard, come and join us!

We don’t have a starting date because of construction, but we hope to begin in the next two weeks.

Sign Language Club

Wednesdays 3:45-4:45

1 EA Credit

 

START DATE: September 23      ROOM: 336

 

The Sign Language Club will meet on Wednesdays after tutoring.  Join the club and learn how to sign using American Sign Language.  You will learn the alphabet, common words, and sentence structure.  Activities will include Deaf poetry slams, deaf museum tours, and learning about Deaf culture.  This is a great way to learn another language without having to worry about speaking or writing!  This is a great skill and activity to put on your resume!

 

 

CHOICE #18

Model United Nations

Thursdays 3:00-4:30

1 EA Credit

 

START DATE: September 23      ROOM: 339B

 

Model United Nations is an international program that teaches students about the United Nations, the international peacekeeping group composed of 191 nations from around the world. Students will learn how to debate and write proposals about solutions to world problems. We will take several field trips to the UN headquarters and/or the embassy of a nation (in NYC). The class ends in a 3 day convention trip where students will debate and solve problems with kids from all over the USA and a few other nations. This class is open to all grades, but freshmen and sophomores are especially encouraged to join as it will boost their Regents exam scores. Colleges look highly upon students who have taken this course in their selection of students. There is also a city-wide dance at the end of the convention.

If you have already signed up for something that is not listed here, please write it on the choices sheet and see Ms. Gordon to make sure that you will get credit for it.

 

If you have participated on a PSAL team, please see Ms. Gordon. If you wish to join a team, speak to your phys ed teacher and watch for notices in the hallway. YOU MUST HAVE A SPECIAL MEDICAL FORM FILLED OUT TO PARTICIPATE. Pick up forms in Room 318.
